In Michigan for a while you could get away with a Class B manual, retake the entire test (pre-trip, backing and road) and then the restriction would be removed. Not sure if that is still a loophole, but it doesn’t prove you can shift a manual in a semi. Otherwise retake the whole test with a manual Class A truck. [deleted] • 4 yr. ago.

When you obtain a CDL with the ‘E’ restriction – Automatic Transmission ONLY – you cannot drive a CDL vehicle with a manual transmission. To get the ‘E’ restriction removed, to be able to drive a CDL vehicle with a manual transmission, you would have to apply for a permit, wait one week, then take the entire CDL practical test as if you ever had a CDL before.
The Pennsylvania CDL manual covers a variety of topics, and everything you’ll need to study to pass your CDL test or get the endorsement you need, including: CDL general knowledge and requirements, combination vehicles, air brakes, tank vehicles, hazmat, doubles triples, passenger vehicles, school bus, vehicle inspection and road skills test.
Clement Truck Driving Academy has both manual and automatic transmission trucks for our students to train in. The larger companies are moving toward all automatic transmission tractors, but there will always be a manual on the road. If you’re worried about shifting an 18-wheeler, don’t – we have automated transmission trucks!
