Dupré’s musical education focused heavily on improvisation, and nearly all of his published organ works are transcriptions or re-workings of his improvisations. Of those, more than half were based on Gregorian chant, including tonight’s selection, first improvised at Notre Dame on August 15, 1919 for the French organ school and a name familiar to most organists, Pierre Cochereau (1924-84), who was the only titular organist of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris from 1955 until his death.1 He had a significant impact in regard to the development of French organ improvisation during his time at Notre Dame. It is this for which he is most well-known.
